Since 1991 Day of Caring brunches have been a tradition in many Dayton area churches, including some in SONKA.

            Currently more than 500 volunteers help with brunches at more than 33 sites in Montgomery, Miami, Greene, Hamilton and Clinton counties, but more sites are desired.  Shiloh UCC in north Dayton and Polk Grove UCC in Vandalia are among the SONKA churches which traditionally host Day of Caring brunches.

            The menu usually features pancakes with sausages and beverages at a cost of $6 per adult, and $4 for seniors and children.

            About $500,000 has been raised by the brunches to date, benefitting such agencies as The Foodbank, the F.I.S.H. Pantry, St. Vincent De Paul, the Emergency Housing Coalition and others.

            The Day of Caring was founded by a Beavercreek woman, Jan Venkayya, as a way of giving the community a hands on way to address problems of hunger and homelessness.
